What a recast means in AI video

Recasting started as a film term: replacing one actor with another after the fact. In AI video it means the same thing, extended to everything visible in the frame. The motion, the timing and the camera come from your footage; the appearance comes from your references.

The practical effect is that a take you cannot reshoot stays usable. You keep the performance and change who is delivering it, where it happens, or what product is in their hand.

How Higgsfield recast works

• Upload the clip you want to recast. It needs to be one clean take between 3 and 30 seconds.
• Attach reference images for every element that should appear: the face, the wardrobe, the product, the location.
• Choose Motion Transfer to rebuild the whole scene, or Object Swap to change a single element.
• Write one or two sentences naming what changes and what must stay, then generate. The credit cost is shown before the run.

What you can recast

• Characters: the lead, a background extra, or one of two performers in the same shot.
• Locations: the same action staged in a different room, city, landscape or time of day.
• Wardrobe and styling: swapping an outfit, a uniform or a colourway across a whole shot.
• Products: putting the real product in a hand that was holding a stand-in.
• Scale and atmosphere: enlarging a creature, replacing a vehicle, adding weather.

Recasting a whole scene versus one element

If everything visible should change but the action must survive, use Motion Transfer. That is the full recast: new cast, new location, same performance.

If only one thing is wrong, use Object Swap. It preserves the rest of the original shot, which matters when the shot is otherwise good - the set, the lighting and the blocking are already approved and you are only there to change the jacket.

Recast tips that hold up

• Keep the source to a single take. A recast of a cut sequence has no single motion to transfer.
• Match references to the light in the source. A hard-lit reference inside soft daylight will look pasted in.
• Name one must-stay per prompt: the punchline, the label, the camera beat.
• Reuse the same references and prompt across a series so the character reads as one person.
